<br />
Today, I'd like to share another vintage postcard from my grandparents' collection.<br />
<br />
This postcard shows Avenida São João, which is a road in downtown São Paulo, Brazil.<br />
<br />
The handwriting on the back of the postcard says:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Edwin<br />
Parabeus!<br />
Felicidades!<br />
Carminha, Edwin, Henrique and Antonieta</blockquote>
It was written in Portuguese. According to Google Translate, this is the translation:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Edwin,<br />
Congratulations!<br />
Cheers!<br />
Carminha, Edwin, Henrique and Antonieta</blockquote>
It doesn't look like the postcard was sent in the mail as there is no stamp or address. I wonder if it was hand-delivered by someone visiting, or if it was sent in an envelope.<br />
<br />
Whatever the case may be, it's an interesting postcard. Just look at all of those vintage cars in the picture. So cool!<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by!<br />
<br />

<br />
"Fill Up Your Tank And Your Tummy Too At Smit's Service." That's what the sign says on the roof of the white building in this photo postcard published by <a href="https://www.cardcow.com/search3.php?s=&perpage=60&pubid=O%27Neill%20Photo&sort=d&publisher=O%27Neill+Photo" target="_blank">O'Neill Photo Co.</a><br />
<br />
I really love this postcard. My grandparents, Debs and Willis Webster, and their family must have purchased this photo postcard during their cross-country trip in the summer of 1952.<br />
<br />
In July of 1952, they <a href="http://janasgenealogyandfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/p/debs-webster-family-immigration-story.html" target="_blank">immigrated to the United States from Brazil</a>, traveling on the ocean liner <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Brazil_(1928)" target="_blank">SS Brazil</a>. Sometime after their arrival in New York, the Webster family bought a car and some camping equipment and traveled across the United States toward their final destination in Southern California.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://janasgenealogyandfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2012/09/those-places-thursdaywebster-family.html" target="_blank">My mom remembers</a> that during this trip they traveled through <a href="http://www.nps.gov/badl/index.htm" target="_blank">Badlands National Park</a> and visited <a href="http://www.nps.gov/moru/index.htm" target="_blank">Mount Rushmore National Memorial</a> in South Dakota.<br />
<br />
It was difficult to figure out where the photo in this postcard was taken. The closest location I can come up with is Geddes, South Dakota. The writing at the bottom of the postcard looks like it says "Gedds, So. Dak." or "Geods, So. Dak." but those places don't exist. But, there is a <a href="http://www.geddessd.org/index.htm" target="_blank">Geddes, South Dakota</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tiyz4-78J3c/VYxNEqKLNDI/AAAAAAAAVPs/FSCnG4VVzIM/s1600/Google%2BMaps%2BShowing%2BGeddes%252C%2BSouth%2BDakota.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tiyz4-78J3c/VYxNEqKLNDI/AAAAAAAAVPs/FSCnG4VVzIM/s640/Google%2BMaps%2BShowing%2BGeddes%252C%2BSouth%2BDakota.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The red pin on this Google Map is where Geddes, South Dakota is located. It's east of the Missouri River. The red arrow is pointing to Badlands National Park. And the blue arrow is pointing to the approximate location of Mount Rushmore National Memorial.<br />
<br />
The postcard also has the words "Wheeler Bridle" or "Wheeler Bridge" written on it. Interestingly, there is a <a href="http://gfp.sd.gov/state-parks/directory/north-wheeler/" target="_blank">North Wheeler Recreation Area</a> located at 2908 N. Wheeler Road in Geddes, South Dakota.<br />
<br />
I searched for 2908 N. Wheeler Road in Geddes, South Dakota in Google Maps and this is what I found. The red pin is where this address is located, near North Wheeler Recreation Area.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-39z2_N0gbH0/VYxq2bgQpDI/AAAAAAAAVP8/lCT-n-Xw2Zs/s1600/Google%2BMaps%2BShowing%2BNorth%2BWheeler%2BRecreation%2BArea%2Bin%2BGeddes%252C%2BSD.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="350" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-39z2_N0gbH0/VYxq2bgQpDI/AAAAAAAAVP8/lCT-n-Xw2Zs/s640/Google%2BMaps%2BShowing%2BNorth%2BWheeler%2BRecreation%2BArea%2Bin%2BGeddes%252C%2BSD.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm so glad my grandparents purchased and then saved so many postcards from their travels.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">In 1955 my maternal grandparents traveled to Mexico to visit family. They went to Mexico City and to Chiapas. They must have bought this postcard while they were there. This postcard shows a bridge somewhere in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">I thought it would be interesting to zoom in on different areas of the postcard to get a better view.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The postcard shows the Villa Riviera and Pacific Coast Club in Long Beach, California. I did a little research online and found that the Villa Riviera (the tall building in the postcard) officially opened in 1929 as a hotel. Today it houses condominiums. The building is listed in the </span><a href="http://www.nps.gov/nr/listings/960802.htm"><span style="font-size: medium;">National Register of Historic Places</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">. <span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">This is a Mirro-Krome vintage postcard by the H. S. Crocker Co., Inc. of San Francisco, California. The postcard was sent to my grandmother, Willis Quillin Webster, when she and her family lived in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomona,_California">Pomona, California</a>.</span> <br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">I don't know if this advertising postcard successfully persuaded my Webster grandparents to use this financial institution or not.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">This is what the typed postcard description at the top left corner of the postcard says:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Does a financial institution have to be on a corner to be successful? Pomona First Federal Savings and Loan Association says "No". After more than 60 years of successful operation in its convenient middle-of-the-block location at 260 South Thomas Street, Pomona, California, Pomona First Federal has grown to assets of over $28,000,000. Your new savings account here may be opened in person or by mail.</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">And here's the printed invitation contained in the message portion of the postcard:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Dear Friend:</span></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">You are cordially invited to join the more than 9800 of your neighbors who are now saving here with insured safety. Your account is welcome. Latest dividend at 3-1/2% annual rate.</span></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Sincerely,</span></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">F. B. Palmer, President</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">I typed the address for the Pomona First Federal Savings and Loan Association listed on this postcard in Google Maps and the image below is what I found. The building on the far right with the green trim is 261 South Thomas Street, one number away from the address listed on this postcard for Pomona First Federal Savings and Loan. And the number 281 is in the middle of the taller building. It's interesting to see how areas change over the years.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">This vintage postcard really is fun and special because it's a valuable piece of my family history. It was sent to my mom and her brothers by their parents (my grandparents) in July of 1955. My grandparents had taken a trip to visit family in Mexico and sent this postcard to their children during their trip. I've blurred the names of my mom and her brothers for privacy reasons.<br /><br />Written message from my grandparents.</span> <br />

<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Today is </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_Day_(Utah)" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Pioneer Day</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> in Utah. It's a state holiday that celebrates the day Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. Many members of <a href="http://www.mormon.org/" target="_blank">The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints</a> also celebrate Pioneer Day outside of Utah as well.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Not only did Mormon pioneers use wagons to cross the plains as they traveled to the Salt Lake Valley, some of them used handcarts like the one shown in this postcard. H</span><span style="font-size: medium;">andcarts were a less expensive alternative to wagons.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_handcart_pioneers" target="_blank">handcart pioneers</a> placed their belongings in their handcart and walked 1,000+ miles across the plains to the Salt Lake Valley, which is an amazing thing to me. It shows the great faith and courage these handcart pioneers had.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">This postcard is a 1939 genuine Curt Teich "C.T. Art-Colortone vintage postcard.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Transcription from postcard description:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<div align="left">
<span style="font-size: medium;">The Hand-cart migration was a distinct movement in Western pioneer travel. From 1856 to 1861 nearly 4,000 people crossed the plains on foot. Men and women pushed or pulled their Hand-carts for 1,000 miles between the Missouri River and Salt Lake City. The Hand-cart companies brought to the State artisans, traders, agriculturists, blacksmiths, and men learned in the professions.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">In April of this year, I shared a vintage postcard with you that shows the </span><a href="http://historytogo.utah.gov/places/historical_places/thisistheplacemonument.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">This Is The Place Monument</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> in Salt Lake City, Utah. I also mentioned in that post that there were six different postcards depicting this monument in my grandparents' collection and that I'd be sharing them in future posts.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: medium;">It's time to share the second of these postcards with you today. The first postcard I shared shows the front of the <a href="http://www.thisistheplace.org/" target="_blank">This Is The Place Monument</a> with the mountains in the background. The postcard I'm sharing today is quite interesting because it shows the back of the monument with the Salt Lake Valley in the background.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">I don't know when this postcard was published. But my grandparents likely bought it in the summer of 1952.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">I'll be sharing more </span><a href="http://www.thisistheplace.org/" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">This Is The Place Monument</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> postcards in future posts.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">This is a postcard that was sent to my maternal grandparents in January of 1954. I've blurred the name and address of the sender for privacy reasons. But here's the message they wrote on January 24, 1954:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Dear friends,</span></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Thank you for your fine Christmas card and message. Father is progressing. He went to meeting this morning. When you are in Salt Lake come to see us again.</span></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Best wishes,</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">In the summer of 1952, my grandparents and their family emigrated from Brazil to the United States. They had joined </span><a href="http://www.mormon.org/" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> in the early 1950s. My grandparents and their family traveled to the United States on the ocean liner S.S. Brazil. They arrived in New York City on July 22, 1952 and remained there until the end of July. They bought a car and some camping equipment and traveled across the United States toward their final destination in California. You can read more about their immigration adventures by clicking </span><a href="http://janasgenealogyandfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/p/debs-webster-family-immigration-story.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">HERE</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">One of the states they visited was Utah. My grandparents and their family stopped to visit the sender of this postcard during their trip to California. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The picture on this postcard shows the LDS </span><a href="https://www.lds.org/church/temples/cardston-alberta?lang=eng" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Cardston Alberta Temple</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The </span><a href="http://www.ldschurchtemples.com/cardston/gallery/" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Cardston Alberta Temple</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> is located in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. The temple was announced on June 27, 1913. Groundbreaking for the temple took place on July 27, 1913. And the temple was dedicated about ten years later on August 26, 1923.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">I found some pictures of the Cardston Alberta Temple online and thought I'd share them here.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>

The first two are captioned “Laying of last stone on Mormon Temple at Cardston, Alberta, Sunday, Sept. 23. Photo A.” and “Laying of last stone on Mormon Temple at Cardston, Alberta, Sunday, Sept. 23. Photo B.” respectively. They both are dated 1917.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">This is a vintage postcard by the Kraemer Art Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. It was included in my grandparents' 1952 scrapbook.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The postcard was written to my maternal grandfather, <a href="http://janasgenealogyandfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/p/debs-webster-family-immigration-story.html" target="_blank">Dr. Debs Warren Webster</a>, on 3 June 1953 and was postmarked the next day. I've blurred the writing for privacy reasons. It was written in Portuguese. I like how my grandfather wrote "respondi 18-6-53" below the address. That means he answered the postcard on June 18, 1953.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The postcard was sent from Storrs, Connecticut, and shows a suspension bridge over the Ohio River with the skyline of Cincinnati in the background.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">After doing some research to try and find information about this bridge, it looks like it's the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge. <span style="font-size: medium;">This is a 1950 genuine Curt Teich "C.T. Art-Colortone" vintage postcard from my grandparents' collection.<br /><br />In July of 1955, my grandparents traveled to Mexico. They traveled alone, leaving their children at home. On their way to Mexico, they stopped in Texas to visit family. This is a postcard they sent home. I've blurred the name of the recipient of this postcard for privacy reasons. <br /><br />The postcard is written in Portuguese. I had to ask my mom to translate it for me, since I don't read or speak Portuguese. In essence, the translation is as follows:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">Dear (name blurred) ,</span></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">We arrived at 6:00 p.m. in El Paso. We spent the night at the home of cousin Pearl. This morning cousin Jackie and the boys took us for a ride sight-seeing. They are so wonderful. They are very blonde (tow-heads), very beautiful and very well educated. They look a lot like our family, almost exactly. <br /><br />Hugs to the children and to you from Debs and Willis.</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The person that this postcard was sent to was my grandmother's sister. Perhaps she was watching the children while my grandparents traveled to Mexico.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">There are a couple more postcards from Mexico in my grandparents' collection. I'll be sharing those in future posts.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">Here's another vintage postcard that my grandparents purchased while they traveled across the United States in the summer of 1952. My regular readers may remember that they had </span><a href="http://janasgenealogyandfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/p/debs-webster-family-immigration-story.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">emigrated from Brazil in July of 1952</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">, and after they arrived in New York, they bought a car and some camping equipment and traveled across the United States on their way to their final destination in California.<br /><br />They visited many <a href="http://www.mormon.org/" target="_blank">LDS</a> historic sites along the way. One of these sites is depicted in this postcard.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">This postcard is a 1947 Genuine Curt Teich "C.T. Art-Colortone" vintage postcard. It shows the </span><a href="http://www.hillcumorah.org/" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Hill Cumorah</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">, Bureau of Information and </span><a href="http://www.hillcumorah.org/cumorah.php" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Angel Moroni Monument</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">, near Palmyra, New York.<br /><br />Transcription from the postcard description:</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">ANGEL MORONI MONUMENT AND BUREAU OF INFORMATION NEAR PALMYRA NEW YORK</span></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">In 1827 <a href="http://www.mormon.org/beliefs/joseph-smith" target="_blank">Joseph Smith</a> received from the Angel Moroni, a resurrected being, the gold plates from which the Book of Mormon, including a record of Christ's Ministry in America, was translated. The plates had been buried in the Hill Cumorah for more than 1400 years. Since its first publication in 1830, the Book of Mormon has been translated into 25 and published in 20 languages. The Bureau of Information supplies information and literature to visitors without charge.</span></blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The </span><a href="http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/book-of-mormon" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> has been translated into many more languages since this postcard was published in 1947. It has now been translated into 82 languages, and more than 150 million copies of the Book of Mormon have been printed.<br /><br />When my grandparents and their family visited The Hill Cumorah, they took a photograph of this historic site.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">My grandparents must have purchased this photo postcard when they visited Utah on their way to California in the summer of 1952. It was found in my grandpa's 1952 scrapbook that had photos and postcards from their <a href="http://janasgenealogyandfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/p/debs-webster-family-immigration-story.html" target="_blank">immigration trip from Brazil to the United States</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">This postcard shows the </span><a href="http://historytogo.utah.gov/places/historical_places/thisistheplacemonument.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">This Is The Place Monument</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> which is located at </span><a href="http://www.thisistheplace.org/" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">This Is The Place Heritage Park</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> in Salt Lake City, Utah.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The monument was dedicated in 1947, one hundred years after the first </span><a href="http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/pioneer-trek" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">My grandparents bought six different postcards depicting this monument. I'll be sharing the rest of these postcards in future posts.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">This is a 1937 "C.T. Art-Colortone" vintage postcard made by Curt Teich & Co., Inc. of Chicago, Illinois. It shows the </span><a href="https://www.lds.org/locations/smith-family-farm" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Early Home of Joseph Smith, Near Palmyra, New York</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">My maternal grandparents and their family <a href="http://janasgenealogyandfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/p/debs-webster-family-immigration-story.html" target="_blank">emigrated from Brazil to the United States in July of 1952</a>. They traveled on the ocean liner, S. S. Brazil. After they arrived in New York, they bought a car and some camping equipment and traveled across the country to their final destination in Southern California. They had joined </span><a href="http://www.mormon.org/" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> in Brazil, so they included some LDS historical sites as they traveled to California. One of the places they stopped was the early home of </span><a href="http://www.mormon.org/beliefs/joseph-smith" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Joseph Smith</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;"> near Palmyra, New York.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Not only did the Webster family purchase this special postcard, they also took a picture of themselves in front of this historic home. I don't see my grandpa in this photo. He must have been the one taking the picture.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">The postcard was sent to my grandfather, Debs Warren Webster, by Helen Edwards. </span><span style="font-size: medium;">I don't who Helen Edwards is and how she knew my grandfather.</span><span style="font-size: medium;"> The year it was sent isn't very easy to see because of the placement of the postmark. <span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Written message on postcard:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">My dear Folks: What has become of you all??? So long "no hear" Maybe I owe you a line; We are on the rush so much don't seem to be able to keep track of correspondence as I would like to. Pearl Nash said she had not heard from you, either. Let us hear, etc. & will write.</span></blockquote>

<br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">This is a 1936 genuine Curt Teich "C.T. Art-Colortone" vintage postcard from my maternal grandparents' collection. It was published by the Deseret Book Company of Salt Lake City, Utah.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">I think it's a very pretty postcard. It shows the Salt Lake Cutoff at sunset.<br /><br />I did a little research online about this Cutoff and found some interesting information from the following websites: </span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucin_Cutoff" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Wikipedia - Lucin Cutoff</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">, </span><a href="http://www.trestlewood.com/page/1020/" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">Tresslewood - Lucin Cutoff Railroad Trestle</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">, and </span><a href="http://historytogo.utah.gov/utah_chapters/statehood_and_the_progressive_era/thelucincutoff.html" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;">History Utah to Go - The Lucin Cutoff</span></a><span style="font-size: medium;">. I learned that the railroad track across the Great Salt Lake was built by the Southern Pacific Company in the early 1900s. It was built to avoid the railway through Promontory Summit. Doing so cut off 44 miles of travel. The Cutoff begins near Ogden, Utah and ends at Lucin, Utah. In the 1950s the wooden tressles were replaced with a parallel causeway.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Transcription from back of postcard:</span><br />
<blockquote>
<span style="font-size: medium;">Fifteen miles west of Ogden, Utah, you actually "go to sea by rail" over the famous cut-off across Great Salt Lake. Affording an unique view of this great inland sea.<br /><br />This cut-off extends west 102.9 miles across the northern arms of Great Salt Lake to Lucin. it was opened March 8, 1904, having cost $4,500,000 and two years of effort.<br /><br />Seventy-two miles of the way the rails are laid on land and for thirty miles on rock fills and heavy trestle work.<br /><br />The Great Salt Lake is more salty than any other body of water except the Dead Sea of Palestine.</span></blockquote>

<span style="font-size: medium;">This is the third Las Vegas vintage postcard that I've shared here on this blog. The manufacturer of this postcard is Plastichrome by Colourpicture Publishers, Inc. of Boston, Massachusetts. It was published by the Las Vegas News Agency in Las Vegas, Nevada.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;">My maternal grandparents must have purchased this postcard on their way from Utah to California in 1952.</span><br />
